The Upstate Regional Landfill in Union County, South Carolina is a full-service, fully permitted and self-contained facility that services residents and businesses of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

The landfill is a subsidiary of Republic Services stationed in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and provides a cost-effective and environmentally secure depository for approximately 1,000 tons of waste per day. The 600 square-acre site has been in operation since July 2002, and has a “life” of at least another 25 to 30 years.

Because preservation of the surrounding ecology is of utmost importance, we utilize the most sophisticated environmental protection systems in the field. The site is enclosed by a 24-inch thick composite liner system that meets complex state and federal regulatory standards and succeeds in blocking contamination of the surrounding topsoil. A pipe atop the liner collects and drains rainwater and additional landfill liquids to a wastewater treatment plant. To ensure the local soil is not being contaminated, a series of wells are installed throughout the site. These wells are sampled quarterly and sent to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Concerns.

To address local air cleanliness, the compound perimeter is equipped with a series of methane gas monitors that detect if pollution is reaching dangerous levels. To minimize odor, freshly deposited waste is covered with clean soil at the conclusion of each workday. Furthermore, perimeter fencing that catches wind-blown refuse controls dust and litter. Finally, to ensure only permitted materials are allowed onto the site, access is limited to one entry and exit at a time.  Receipts are used to track shipments, and each load is visually inspected to determine it’s content.
